North Dakota’s legislature takes medicine back to the ‘stone ages’. That’s what retired Fargo Physician Ted Kleiman said when speaking out against the state legislative attacks on women’s health; he also referred to bills as ‘abhorrent in the highest degree’. Not a single one of the five abortion related bills that passed allow for a victim of rape or incest to terminate a resulting pregnancy.
Today the North Dakota House passed its fourth effective ban on abortion this session; HB 2368 could have devastating consequences when a woman is experiencing medical complications. Most abortions take place in the first trimester of pregnancy. While later abortions are quite uncommon, it is important that a woman and her doctor have every medical option available. In states that have passed laws like this, some women and their families have been put into heartbreaking and tragic situations — needing to end a pregnancy for serious medical reasons, but unable to do so.
